If a woman has cervical cancer does it also mean that she has HPV?

If a woman has cervical cancer does it also mean that she has HPV?

Cervical cancer is not considered to be hereditary. It's caused by certain types of a common virus, human papillomavirus (HPV).

There are many types of HPV. Most of them are harmless, but others can be quite serious, like the ones that can cause cervical cancer.

How does HPV become cervical cancer?

When a woman becomes infected with certain 鈥渉igh-risk?types of human papillomavirus (such as HPV Types 16 and 18) and her body does not clear the infection, abnormal cells can develop in the lining of her cervix. If these abnormal cells are not discovered early, they can become cervical precancer and then cancer. In most cases, this process can take a number of years, although in rare instances it can happen within a year.

Half of all females diagnosed with cervical cancer are between 35 and 55 years of age. At this age, they may be raising children and contributing to the income and overall well-being of their families. However, many of these women may not realize that they were probably exposed to one of the 鈥渉igh-risk?types of HPV during their teens and 20s.

That's why it's important to talk with your doctor early on and learn more about Pap tests, which help detect abnormal cell changes in the cervix before they become cancerous. Source(s): http://hpv.com/cervical-cancer/causes-of...

Hi, I'm a cytotechnologist, the laboratorian that screens your Pap tests for cervical cancer.

If a woman has cervical cancer, the chances that it was caused by the HPV virus is 99%. There are a few non-related cervical cancers, such as clear cell carcinoma, that are not related to the HPV virus, but are thought to be genetic, these usually occur in very young girls (often less than 5 years of age), or are related to drugs associated with cervical cancer (DES babies).

Whether it is related or not, having cervical cancer does not mean that you received it from your current partner. HPV can lay dormant for 50 years or longer. Since the genetic varieties usually occur in young girls, and DES is no longer given to mothers, the chances that cervical cancer is associated with HPV is extremely high.
Most people have HVP (85%-90% of the population). HPV causes cervical cancer but most strains of HPV to not cause cancer. The body normally overcomes it when infected with the types that do cause cancer, but obviously not always. There are hundreds of strains. HPV also lives on the surrounding skin and hair, so condoms do not protect against it, and intercourse is not neccessary to become infected with HPV.
