Health insurance question for people who move alot and sub-contract.?

What would be a good insurance company in the US to go through, considering we make considerable money. Not a whole bunch, but better than getting the rip off Cobra.

I would recommend finding a local broker that can help you sort through the options in your state. A broker will represent multiple carriers. But a good starting place is Assurant Health they are the largest insurer of individuals in the US and they are the only company that has coverage up to 25 million, most other carriers only go up to 5 and at the most 7 million

Try using yellowpages.com to search for health insurance brokers in your area.

Don't call your auto and home agent they specialize in property and causality insurance. You need someone that specializes in health insurance.

Since insurance is regulated on the state level even if you have a national carrier like Assurant, Blue Cross, etc. each time you move to a new state you will need to apply for coverage based in the new state. If you are moving within a single state make sure you avoid plans that only service regions within a state like Kaiser.

What's the sub contract part about? Just to identify that you can't get coverage through an employer?

Here in the US, insurance is regulated on a state by state basis. So there might be a plan covering if you move out of state a lot, but my guess is it's going to be a major medical, and not cover routine stuff and minor stuff. And good luck on finding local providers EVERYWHERE.

Additionally, the "rip off Cobra" is usually a great deal, because it covers stuff already wrong with you. It only seems expensive, because your EMPLOYER was picking up a huge chunk of the tab.

With insurance, you get what you pay for. Want a $5,000 deductible? That will cut the premium in half.


Bottom line - talk to a local agent near you, ask them for help. Don't buy this over the internet.

You will want to choose a well known and reputable nationwide company with a large network of providers.
