Health Insurance help... Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of NJ.?

Right now I have the POS plan and need referrals to see other doctors, which is a little annoying. I'm 23 and don't really have a clue what the best choice is. Should I switch to something different? If yes, what plan and why?

:] thank you.

My first question would be: Do you have your Horizon BCBS coverage through an employer, or are you buying coverage on your own? If you are considering a switch from one employer-sponsored plan to another, that鈥檚 fine. Lots of people prefer PPO-style plans that provide them with more freedom choosing doctors and seeing specialists. That鈥檚 entirely your call.

But if you are currently buying health insurance on your own (rather than getting it through an employer), then you need to be careful about pre-existing conditions. If you switch from one health insurance company to another and you have a pre-existing medical condition, then you may face higher monthly premiums or even be declined for coverage, depending on the rules in your state (this may not be a concern for you in NJ because of state laws governing health insurance, but it鈥檚 something to be aware of).

If you want to get an idea of what鈥檚 available in your area, you can get health insurance quotes from several website including eHealthInsurance.com, where I work. You can compare plan rates and benefits side by side to see how your options stack up against each other, and you can even apply for coverage online. But be sure not to cancel your existing coverage until you receive confirmation of your approval from a new health insurance carrier.

In any case, you should consider speaking with a licensed agent. You can find an agent in your area or else through eHealthInsurance.com. An agent can help you think through your options, decide which health benefits are important to you, and what you are willing to pay for monthly premiums, copayments or deductibles.

Good luck!
