If taxes pay for your health insurance, do voters get to decide a person's lifestyle?

If the US, or any nation, had universal healthcare would the persons on this insurance get to do whatever activities they wished?

Would taxpayers allow a person with universal healthcare to smoke? They would be creating costs...

Would taxpayers allow a person to eat fatty foods? Again, creating costs...

The list of unhealthy activities goes on and on.

If people cannot afford health coverage would their life be decided by the voters who are paying for their healthcare?

Without creating a larger debate, I'll quickly say the voters and government are the same for this question. The electorate puts the government in office which in turn runs the proposed universal healthcare. Universal emergency coverage is slighly different, but yes, we currently pay to keep someone alive if they visit the ER.

It's simple. Institute universal healthcare and invest in preventative medicine and education. Then tax severly unhealthy things like alcohol, tobacco sugar and saturated fats. It adds up.

Interesting but check this out. Is it better to have insurance and not get any healthcare like in Canada or is it better to get health care and have private insurance? I do not want anyone dictating what I do. If people can dictate what i do like smoking or drinking because I cause the price to go up then I say ban running, skiing, mountin climbing, para sailing, surfing, playing sports.....everyone should just be a couch potato and do nothing and wear a helmet and body armor........

No. Any universal system would be administered by the government. Would YOU want the government dictating your lifestyle?
And the taxpayers are already paying for health care for everybody. Remember grandmaster-Bush, "They can just go to the emergency room".

interesting question.
not sure i know the answer... but i have noticed more health insurance companies that offers discounts if people belong to a gym.
maybe that's the way forward : encouragement rather than punishment. (carrot, rather than the stick).

Yes, yes it will.

we already pay for healthcare through our taxes and we dont
get to dictate lifestyle - thank goodness

This already happens ,some employers and insurance companies make people pay higher premiums from wages for obesity, smoking and prior chronic conditions. How do you think you get health-care? When you work for an employer , all the other employees pay into that plan. You aren't paying for all of your health coverage. You couldn't it would be WAY too expensive.

Almost NO ONE could afford health coverage if they had to pay it alone - out of pocket.

The people who you say could not afford health coverage would be paying into it , so they would sort of be paying their own way.Trying to control the behavior of other people is darn near impossible and they could always lie.

Anyone who works and gets a paycheck - pays income tax, anyone who buys something at a store pays a sales tax. Anyone who owns or rents property pays taxes. Some people pay more taxes than others. For example, wealthy people pay more taxes does that mean that their life is more valuable than your life?If I had say 3 dollars more than you - I would be wealthier than you and therefore my life would be more important than yours.

When you pay property taxes you pay for other people's children to attend school and your children too or no one could afford to send their children to school and get an eduacation.Education wasn't always free.I pay more in property taxes in a year than I do in income taxes.Which is more important saving a life or providing an education?
