How are health insurance markets different from markets for other goods and services?

my mom is writing a report on this.

One of the ways that health insurance markets are different from other markets is the way in which the cost of health insurance is so closely tied to the cost of health care - and more importantly the types of things that affect the cost of health care.

One of the biggest contributors to the increasing cost of medical care is that no one knows how much anything costs and the majority of people that get medical care are not paying for the care (their insurance company is).

In 1998 the normal cost of laser surgery was about $2200 per eye. Now it's close to $1350. It's no coincidence that this procedure is rarely covered by health insurance. Laser eye surgery is one of few health procedures sold in a free market with price advertising and consumer-driven purchases.

One of the ways that people are trying to keep costs down is with Health Savings Accounts (HSA's). Here is more information on HSA's:
