Evercare health insurance?

My 67 year old mother has medicare health insurance. To cover the rest of payments that's not covered by medicare, she had Blue Cross Blue Shield. But she just changed to Evercare insurance starting this year. It's kinda complicated and I don't understand it... which would be better? Pros and cons would be there's no monthly premium with Evercare but you have to pay higher deductible when you use the services. If you've had Evercare, what do I need to know to make a better decision?

This is much too complicated to give you a definite answer here. Evercare is a Medicare Advantage Special Needs plan. Depending on what state she lives in the Blue Cross plan might have been a regular Medicare Advantage plan but more than likely it was a Medicare Supplement. Which is better depend on her situation which no one here will know and since you didn't say which Blue Cross plan there is no way to make a comparison.

There is no deductible with the Evercare plan but there are co-pays when you use medical services. The Evercare plan also includes Part D prescription drug coverage. A Medicare Supplement from Blue Cross or anyone else does not have co-pays for most services but the premium can be high and will not include Part D.

Medicare has restrictions on when you can change plans. Generally, you have annual enrollment from November 15 to December 31 to make unlimited changes and open enrollment from January 1 to March 31 to make limited changes. You cannot change during the rest of the year, however, with a special needs plan you can change to another special needs plan at any time. There may or may not be another special needs plan in your area. She is guaranteed to switch back to a Medicare Supplement, if that is what she had with Blue Cross, within 12 months after switching to the Evercare plan without underwriting or an increase in premium due to health reasons within the above timelines.

What you need to know is how much the co-pay would be for any prescriptions she has and for any medical services she uses with her current plan. You would compare this info with the other plans available and also with Medicare Supplements. It is not an easy chore.

Visit a local agent that works with all the major companies in your area. The agent can find the best plan for her situation and since they represent all the companies will not try to shoe-horn her into any particular plan. There is no extra charge using an agent.
