Health Insurance for Transsexuals ????

Do you believe that Health Insurance should pay for our hormone treatments and surgery ? Please tell me why or why not

Being that we are born with our condition and there is medical science showing this, do you not feel that health insurance should help to pay for the corrective procedures needed for us.

Thanks Ravyn

moving to san francisco is not an option unfortunately

of course insurence should pay for it and all related fields . its not in itself that is the issue but what can be the results left untreated . high blood pressure heart probs severe depression , highere risk for hiv and aids since people are left to aquire the funds on their own . botched suicde attempts , damages done by the self doctored aquiring hormones from the net or the black market . yeah sure the insurence companies might be deluged with claims at first for transsexual needs but after the wave its not like every man and woman is lining up to be the opposite gender

Of course insurance should pay for it. It is a medical condition.

Actually my insurance does pay for my therapy. I have 8 sessions no questions asked, after that my therapist has to request additional sessions. They typically approve me for 24 sessions a year. They also pay 80% of my Doctors appointments after meeting my deductable of $250.00 per year. If I have over $1500.00 per year of out of pocket expence they then cover it all. I have a co-pay on my hormones of $20.00 for name brand meds and $10.00 for generics. My insurance cost me $5.00 per hour worked, I typically work around 1800 hours a year so it is very expencive.

I feel it is redicules that the U.S. does not have a natonal plan. I would gladly pay that same $5.00 per hour into a natonal plan if it gave the same or better coverage.

Of course it should. But it just doesn't.
People aren't comfortable with the conclusions about this medically. They think it's just perversion or choice. And insurance "shouldn't pay for choice" (let alone expensice choice, and perverse choice) THAT'S what people think.

And so that's why you get no insurance help.

There is currently one exception...the city of San Francisco pays for the treatment (hormone therapy AND ops) of any city employee who is diagnosed as geneder dysphoric.

So you could go there and try real hard to get a job for the city

The Ontario Provincial Government announced yesterday that they are moving to pay for the necessary surgeries for MTF and FTM under the Provincial Health Plan.

It was covered years ago and then taken away.

The Ontario Human Rights Commission and the Opposition parties have been calling for the reinstatement of the procedure for some time.

Yes, I think that health insurance should pay for it.
Where I am (Alberta) our government pays for things such as this. I also believe it is becoming more of an acceptable thing in our society. Another thing is that I think health insurance pays for much more ridiculous things!... So why not for transsexuals...after all-it is a valid medical problem.

EMD145: Yes, Ontario re-enstated payment for SRS, but guess what? You have to go through the Center for Addiction and Mental Health (other known as the Clark or Cluck) to get it. So, basically the situation in Ontario is UNCHANGED.

Honestly, I don't know what to think. It would be great for people who want to have a sex change. I understand that some people are not happy with being the sex that they are but maybe health care should cover more serious issues before this one. I'm on the fence with this question.

Health Insurance

should NEVER cover cosmetics
