Are there any health insurance companies that pay for lapband surgery?

Also, with new insurance, how long is the wait before they will pay for any (minor) surgeries? Ive been led to believe that lapband surgery is short and simple.

I am overweight and want to get the surgery done. I know I am within the weight limit recommended for it but it has not been recommended by a Dr yet.

What health insurance companies are "lapband" friendly?

If you are overweight enough to need this surgery, then you will probably not qualify for new insurance. Therefore, this may be moot.

If, hypothetically speaking, you do manage to find new insurance, coverage for pre-existing conditions (those that you already had when you first become covered) is normally excluded for 6-12 months for a group plan from work or 18 months for an individual policy. However, if you had other "creditable" coverage previously, with a gap of no more than 2 months, then this waiting period is reduced by one month per month of prior "creditable" coverage. If you have had no prior coverage for more than 63 days, this does not apply.

There ARE health insurers who will (eventually) pay for the costs of lapband surgery. However, given the relatively high costs of such surgery, they will require that you attempt other far less expensive means to achieve weight loss. You will be required to undergo at least one year's timeframe of medically supervised weight loss treatments, including assorted diets and exercise regimens.

There is a valid reason why health insurers mandate such attempts. Understand that lapband surgery is merely a surgically forced diet. There is NOTHING which lapband provides which you cannot do on your own.

I realize that you probably do not like this response, but those are the facts.

Have you considered getting up off your fat **** and stepping away from the Doritos? It's much simpler and more effective than having surgery to correct a lifestyle deficiency.

Expecting your insurance company to pay for unnecessary elective surgery is a pretty long shot.

I just went to a seminar in chicago Mercy Hospital.. FYI -Public aid will pay for it with medical justification.(Quicker than commerical insurance) i was told. They will put you on a medical diet for a few months first and check your psyche.

I hope not. I think people should get control, exercise and eat right. I think it is about equal with cosmetic surgery. It is only done on people that are too lazy to take proper care of themselves.

Not if you already need/want it. Insurance companies can't profit insuring the known...they can only insurance unexpected items.

Unless your doctor says your lap band is medically necessary, your insurance will not cover it at all.
