I have an infection and I need antibiotics. I have no health insurance. I need to know the price of my visit?

I'm sure the answer to this question will vary, but just on average, what might be the cost of a dr. visit+ antibiotics

thankyou to anyone who responds.

I had the same problem.

I don't know what state you are in. In Massachusetts you can apply for "freecare" at most hospitals. "Freecare" pay for lab tests, but you pay for the doctors bill. Mine was $200. at an emergency room for possible strep. Then they make you submit the bill with freecare certificate and they knock off 1/2 your bill.

My primary care DR at clinic charged like $120 and $80. for a NP (nurse practitioner) visit... that was about 3 years ago. I bypassed all that and went in and had a nurse give me the testing supplies (urine) and dropped it off at the lab.

Medicine depends on WHAT they GIVE you, and WHAT it is FOR Amoxocillin, penicillin is cheaper then the new antibiotics.

The ER DR gave me a newer antibiotic it was like $120-$170. CVS pharmacy saved me money by giving me twice the pills at the lower dosage (example: rather than giving me 30, 1000mg, I got 60, 500mg pills).

I skipped going to the doctors, because of not having insurance. My doctor told me I should have come in and she could have given me samples. If you have/had an ongoing relationship with a doctor, they'll probally be more concerned for you.

When your sick you really don't want to price check the meds, but you can save some money if you call different pharmacy's or CVS has a price estimator on their website.

Oh there are also discount perscription plans out there. Some are free, some have free trials, and some have a monthly fee. (I have tried a dental discount, and pharmacy plan...both were free.

If you have AAA CVS gives a discount.

Best Wishes, and get well soon.
the price varies and the antibiotic price will change depends on location and if there is a generic form avaible. Depending on the infection you can also look into alternative medicine forms. For example caynne pepper as a gargle works very well for sore throats. I AM NOT A DR. However I have tried several and many have worked. I tend to be sheepish of the "buy this miracle cure" but many plants are being researched for their active medicinal chemicals. Milk thistle is one that has the studies to back it up.
The cost will vary to go to the doctor. If its not life threatening try one of the alternative remedies. A simple search will let you get more info. Web Md also has a list of symptoms that will help you to see if it is more serious

FEEL BETTER and good luck
Most cities have clinics that are there for the uninsured or under insured. Your public health department can point you in the right direction. Also, be up front with the doctor about being low on funds and ask him/her to write you a prescription for something that won't break the bank. Antibiotics run anywhere from inexpensive (less than 20) to really pricey (over $100) for a course that is appropriate for your condition. what the doctor prescribes will also depend on what type of infection you have. Most are willing to work with you and get you on a medication that is the right one and one you will take because you can afford to fill it. Also, don't be afraid to ask for samples. Most clinics have them and happily hand them out. Good luck!
I cannot give you an exact price of a Dr.'s visit, but I'd suggest going to a free clinic, or a community health center (based on income). Walmart pharmacies have an intriguing new program and many antibiotics for 30 pills would only cost $4 + tax. Another point is do you need an antibiotic? Antibiotics treat bacterial infections but are worthless for viral ones. Many patients come to the Dr. wanting medicine, and don't want to be told that nature has to take it's course. These conditions (like the flu) have to be treated systemically, which means we treat the symptoms and let your natural immune system fight off the infection.

You do not say where your infection is. Call the doctor's office you plan to go to and they will give you the price for an office visit. Explain to the doctor you have no insurance and ask him if he has samples of antibiotics he can give you. If not, compare prices at the pharmacies in your area. Avoid the name brand ones as they tend to cost more. A wal-mart pharmacy would be cheaper for you.
