My wife was in a car accident tonight and she doesn't have health insurance. What can I expect?

She went to the emergency room after the accident complaining of pain in her shoulder. They put her in a neck brace, and now she's having an x-ray of her shoulder done. I'm just wondering what kinds of costs we're talking about here, and whether there are any social programs we might be able to take advantage of to lighten the load. We live in Indiana.

The X-Ray could be in the ball park of about $300, depending on where you live that could conceivably be more than that.

I had a three day or so stay in a hospital that cost over $12,000. Another time I went to the emergency room, I think it cost around $1200.

If you don't make very much money, and you write to the hospital telling them your situation, they may just write it off. You can expect to send them a tax return or the like as proof that you don't make much money.

If you do make fairly good money, then you are likely to have to pay it, especially if she, or you, signed paperwork to the affect that you you would be financially liable for the costs.

If you are going to have troubles paying it, you may try the Red Cross, Salvation Army, or there's another one that at this time escapes my brain. Provided the bill is not terribly huge, you can probably work out a paiment schedule with the hospital. So long as you are contributing something to it every month, you probably shouldn't have much to worry about.

If another car was involved, and they are found to be at fault, they may be able to pay upwards of $25,000 or more, if they are insured. If they aren't you might have uninsured drive coverage that might help as well. If you haven't already, try talking to your auto insurance company. i dont know

but i am terribly sorry and i hope everything goes well.

i always see this commercials about 1-800 ask gary or something
Let the hospital know your situation..if it is like calif...your looking at around 500 with what you told me...depending on what your income is you can go to the state welfare and see if they can help...and if not...you can always go to a church or a few and ask for help...if you go to moorelifenow.org and let Keith Moore know he might help or know someone in your area that would..Ask God to show you where to go..and pray it always helps...hope it helps..
the car insurance usually has a clause that pays for the medical bills up to a certain point -call your provider. they will also figure out who is at fault and collect from the other driver's insurance, if needed.
A B I G fat bill from the hospital! My condolences by the way, so sorry to hear that.
Most hospital have a Hill Burton program that will or can help, but it may just be for major medical. Or just set up a payment plan with the hospital. As long as you're paying even $10 a month, there isn't much they can do. Sounds like what she's having done isn't real extensive in cost, but I know how those $500 here and $500 there can add up. It always amazes me that you have to pay someone to take the x-ray, then pay someone else to read it, then pay someone else to tell you the results! No wonder this nations medical system is out of whack!
