I was wondering if anyone knows if United Health Care insurance covers gastric bypass surgery? |
I was wondering if anyone knows if United Health Care insurance covers gastric bypass surgery? The FIRST thing you need to do is talk to your doctor. The reason for this is, my friend wanted bypass done. Insurance covered it IF she met the correct criteria. Being overweight is only part of it. She had to go to several doctors, including sessions with a shrink. This went on for months. It is a very serious process. She was diagnosed as "morbidly obese". She has diabetes and hypertension. BUT, the end result was, she was turned down for the surgery. She, like all over weight people say, "I have tried every diet and they just don't work. I always put it back on." "I have been fat all my life. There is something wrong." Her medical problems were ALL caused by her weight problem. Even at 43 years old they would not approve her for surgery after all the testing. The reason was, they could not believe that she had stuck with any diet long enough and had absolutely no history of keeping weight off. They did not want to perform such a serious surgery only to have her cheat and gain it all back again. You can cheat after by pass. People don't know they can become obese again. It just takes longer after surgery. Most people are just looking for an easy and quick way to drop pounds, sad but true. When this is discovered by the medical people, you get rejected for the surgery. This gives you something to think about. You need a conversation with your doctor to discuss the details and you might reconsider. This will depend (with all insurance companies) so you will need to call them. If you are going to have it because it will save your life and your doctor will help you fight to get it coverd it may be ok. If it is because you want to look better chances are it wont be covered. Yes they do! Thank God. But you do have to meet certain requirements and be on the right plan. Talk to your doctor, more than likely he/she has the information for precertification guidelines. Or you could give them a call, they're really good about getting information out. Their website is http://www.myuhc.com I work for a major health insurance company. (Blue Cross Blue Shield).
