How easy is it to get individual health insurance through AARP?

I'm transitioning into self-employment and finding that private health insurers are declining coverage to me based on my weight and high blood pressure (well-controlled). I'll be 50 very soon and will fill out applications to AARP. The telephone representative was very friendly on the phone. Does anyone know if their underwriting is more flexible than the mainline companies?

AARP writes their health insurance through United Health, which is a very good "mainline" company. However, the policies through AARP are stripped of many of the benefits that regular United Health (and other companies) policies have. AARP says the underwriting is more lenient than regular policies but I haven't found that to be the case. The weight charts are very close to the charts of the regular policies.

I have had many clients get off of the AARP policies and on to something else because of claims hassles and customer service after the sale. It seems that they are very picky about claims and they like to investigate many claims to see if it was a pre-existing condition that wasn't revealed on the application. This results in at least a delay in payment if not worse action. Source(s): Independent Agent

Only folks who work for AARP would be able to answer this because they are a completely captive insurance agency forget who underwrites the coverage. Actually, never mind, because they are captive, they wouldn't have a true feel for underwriting with other companies.

Your best bet is to deal with an agent who specializes in health insurance because it is a different animal than other risks. Also depending on your state laws, you may be able to get a policy anyway if you operate a corporation instead of doing it sole-proprietor. Your health person should know for sure.
