Health insurance in California?

My wife and I will be moving to California in December. We've heard that health insurance is more expensive there than in other states. My question is this: If I'm unable to get a job that offers health insurance as a benefit and I'm forced to buy my own policy - about (exact quotes not necessary) how much should I expect to pay monthly? I know there are a lot of different kinds of policies. I am open to any information you may have about whatever kind of policy you are familiar with. Please indicate what kind of policy it is.

I'm a 37 year old male (non-smoker, average BMI)
My wife is 30 (non-smoker, good BMI)

Any information would be appreciated! Thank you!

A high deductible comprehensive plan (around $5000) will run you around $200-$300 per month. A low deductible comprehensive plan (around $1000) will run you around $400-$500 per month. If you need maternity coverage you can expect to add $300 to the above figures. A basic plan will run about $50 less per month. Source(s): Independent Agent
About $600 for the both of you.
