Why don't doctors offer limited health insurance?

I learned something about my HMO from a co-worker who is married to a doctor.

He said his wife, the doctor, receives $15.00 per month for each patient that has her listed a their primary care physician. The only other payment she receives is the $20.00 co-pay per visit.

I would think that a doctor could offer a similar form of basic health insurance. Maybe each patient could pay a small fee of say $15-$30 each month then pay a co-pay of a similar amount for each visit. In exchange, the doctor would be available for office visits. Any catastrophic care would need to be covered by a separate policy.

I can't be the only person to think of this idea so does anyone know of a reason it hasn't been done yet?

We could all move to England where they pay a 17%vat tax, i would much rather pay extra tax at the check out than try to muster up 400 a month for health insurance.
You have to remember, we in the US There is no way a doctor, whether general MD, ophthalmologist, podiatrist is going to give up the amount of money they get from each and every patient they see. Some regular Md's in Florida get 130 a visit per person every time they come. Each thing they do, quick blood test for anemia, blood pressure check, etc is charged individually, not just by the visit, 130 dollars is just for the man to walk in the door and say "Hi what brings you here today" The expense of running an office can not be accomplished by what you propose.

Also remember, that until something is done on the government level health care will continue to be astronomical. Where do a lot of politicians get funding? Doctors, large medical suppliers and drug companies. Why? Simple, I give you campaign money and you vote NO on health care reform. Been going on for years, and I see no light at the end of the tunnel in the near future.
there do
Huh? I work for a doctor, when a person comes in with an HMO and has a 10 dollar co-pay , we then bill the insurance carrier for the remainder of the visit, in this case ophthalmology, which is 120 on top of the co-pay,however that depends on the HMO, some pay more, some less. We do not get 20 bucks a month for each patient we have. Unless there is some kind of insurance I don't know about. When dealing with a medicaid patient we can only get what they allow and that is 25 bucks from the government, therefore , many doctors have opted not to see medicaid patients. Doctors will not go for this. They make astronomical amounts of money doing it the way they are doing it now. If you have a doctor in a small town that maybe only has 3-4 hundred patients, having them give him 20 dollars a month for astronomical insurance would not cover the cost of one surgery, remember the hospital has to be paid as does the anesthesiologist, x-ray docs, nursing staff etc. It just wont work financially. Also , remember that the doctors own mal practice insurance can run hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. The doc I work for pays 120 thousand a year.
excellent..no wonder Wal-Mart is in the process of
putting together a health plan for the free-market.
Other plans do exist.
Maybe one of the many reasons that this hasn't happened on a more widespread basis is that most people think healthcare is a right and not something they should have to pay for.
Remember, you get what you pay for.
There are plenty of Doctor clinics that you can see a doctor for around $60.00.

So you want to pay $30.00 a month and a $30.00 co pay, to be able to see a Doctor , maybe twice a year.

Spending $420.00 per year,

Instead of just paying $120.00 for the two doctors visit's .

==============================...

Paying for the doctors exam isn't the problem.

The problem is people without health insurance , having to pay the lab fees for any test done, and for the medicine the doctor perscribes.

But then you look, most people won't pay a dentist $80.00 a year for an annual checkup and teeth cleaning.

They wait till there is a problem, then have to pay 5 times as much , to get the damage done, that the dentist would have found and been able to fix cheaply at an annual exam.

People have somehow got it in thier heads that they shouldn't have to pay for medical care.

It's ok to make someone pay $1,400 a month for a 500 sq foot apartment.

It's ok to make someone pay $150 a month for car insurance.

But darn it, they shouldn't have to pay $300 a month for medical insurance.

ir doesn't make alot of sense.
