Can having gingivitis or periodontal disease give you heart problems? |
I have had bleeding gums for over 4 years and my teeth are suffering. I'm pretty sure that I read somewhere that the plaque can travel through your blood stream and end up getting stuck in your veins, causing heart problems, even a heart attack. Do you think this is true? Gum disease runs in my family and I'm just terrified of the dentist. Are there any home remedies to get me through until I save up enough money to go to the dentist? When I floss, piece of my teeth break off, I can't floss. So, I got a water pik. But they still bleed profusely. I guess I'll be a 33 year old with dentures...EEEEK!!!! Thank you for your answers!!! Studies have shown that people with severe gum disease might be more likely to have precursors to heart disease than those with milder forms of the disease, known as periodontitis. This is because the infection can flow through your blood vessels and affect the heart directly. This is one of the reasons why people should be more aware of their dental health and prevent any form of teeth and gum disease. YES, PERIODONTAL DISEASE HAS BEEN SHOWN TO CAUSE HEART PROBLEMS. INCLUDING SEVERE INFECTIONS. Yes. Everything Dr. Albert said is correct. Gum disease is not curable by home remedies, however you can help yourself by brushing and flossing everyday. You need to see the dentist. Gum disease may run in your family, however it may not be just genetics as you may think. People that don't take proper care of their teeth and gums, (eg....seeing the dentist 2 to 4X a year for regular check-ups and cleanings, brushing and flossing properly everyday, eating a diet low in carbs, sugar etc.) may experience some level of gum/tooth disease due to neglect, not just a predisposition to the disease itself. Genetics and life choices can make disease in the mouth worse, which does not stop at the mouth but can affect other parts of the body as well. It increases your risk factors for heart disease, strokes, diabetes, clogged arteries, blood infections, pre-term pregnancy, the list goes on and on. See your dentist now!! |
