Does anyone know anything about Hokem's Disease of the Heart?

I have been to a number of doctors none of whom know anything about Hokems. I know that it exists because my father could not be revived after having a stroke apparently because he had this disease. It is hereditary but I know little else. Thanks in advance for any advice/links about this disease...

Sarah, I think that is exactly what it stands for. I have read some info on it and it all adds up. I am going to get myself tested and see what happens. Thanks for your helpful answer!

I have heard of this and I'll tell you all I know. My friend's mother had it and talked to our nursing class about it. It is severe cardiomyopathy...and it causes sudden cardiac death, as well as congestive heart failure. People with this disease can develop deadly dysrhythmias without warning- ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation. They're fine one minute and the next they're about to die. It is very serious and very scary. I know my friend's mother had a permanent packemaker placed in her chest so that if she had one of these dysrhythmias it would convert it back to a normal one. Also, she was at one time a candidate for a heart transplant, but that was later cancelled because research had shown that people with Hokem's weren't good candidates because the transplanted heart would eventually end up the same as the bad one (something with the body/genes that just makes it that way). She had trouble finding doctors as well, and I know she had to travel out of state (out of NC). She mentioned some doctors in South Carolina but I don't know who. She also mentioned the doctors at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio- absolute best in cardiology. The disease is hereditary and you, as his daughter, are at risk. You need to have some tests done to make sure you don't have it as well (like an echocardiogram). Hope this helps.

Could you mean HOCM? It is an acronym for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (pronounced like "Hokem"), and it is a congenital condition that leads to a thickened myocardium (the heart muscle). This often leads to the heart's pumping ability being comprimised. I hope I have provided you with some information that can help you! I see this condition sometimes in my practice (I am a cardiac nurse), and it often goes unrecognized until other problems present.

There is no information about this on the internet, what so ever.

Could that be Hakim's disease of the heart?
