An infection in your mouth is a very dangerous thing and should not be taken lightly - can lead to an infection of your heart's lining or sheath. Yes, it can, but the chance is low, unless you have had some heart disease especially heart valve problems. Microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi can go into the bloodstream easily and bypass the immune tissues. When they reach the normal heart, it is ok because the normal flow would not allow them the stay on. But if the heart valve or internal lining is abnormal, the flow is disrupted and these microorganism can stay on the tissue and grow there. Hence heart infection results and it is a major problem which could be fatal. Bad teeth can be so scary that people may have a heart attack! statistics, so maybe from infection. |
