Can salt cause heart disease?

Can salt cause heart disease?

In the long run, yes it can. Adding extra salt to your diet, can lead up to hypertension or high blood pressure. In any hypertensive situation, the heart has to work harder to distribute blood throughout the body. Take a cup full of water and two straws. One being a normal drinking straw and the other is smaller in diameter, like those little red ones used to stir coffee with. Take a mouth full of water and push it out through each straw. You'll find it more difficult through the smaller one. Now imagine that kind of pressure on your heart all the time, distributing 5-6 liters of blood 24 hrs a day. There will be a lot of complications and diseases that will develop if gone unresolved. Hope this helps. Source(s): Emergency Room Nurse

Your body is comprised of lots of salt. You should always use it in moderation, just like everything else. Doctors limit heart patient's intake because the medication causes you to retain salt.
