Anyone else with TGV (congenital heart disease) had a baby???

I was born with a complicated heart condition (transposition of the great vessels) and I have a mechanical mitral valve and a pacemaker. Has anyone known anyone with this condition that has had a baby???

First: you really need to consult a cardiologist for an answer. The combination of issues, your medications, your general health, your family history -- all will influence the answer.

I did not find any reports in the medical literature of a case with all three of the conditions you listed: transposition of the great vessels, mechanical mitral valve and a pacemaker. Taken individually, pregnancy can be managed sucessfully. The combination may be quite different!

Transposition of the great vessels
The medical literature shows that while quite risky, some women with transposition of the great arteries have had successful pregnancies.

Mechanical mitral valve
The literature attests to a number of births to women with mechanical valves. Note that essential medications may be teratogenic (cause birth defects.)

Pacemaker
No major problems are reported with the pacemaker & pregnancy. Source(s): Drenthen W. Pieper PG. Ploeg M. Voors AA. Roos-Hesselink JW. Mulder BJ. Vliegen HW. Sollie KM. Ebels T. van Veldhuisen DJ. ZAHARA Investigators. Risk of complications during pregnancy after Senning or Mustard (atrial) repair of complete transposition of the great arteries. European Heart Journal. 26(23):2588-95, 2005 Dec.
CONCLUSION: In this largest report on pregnancy in women with atrial-corrected TGA to date, a high incidence of obstetric complications and mortality in the offspring was observed.

CONCLUSIONS. In this small group of women with good quality late survival after a Mustard operation, pregnancy was well tolerated. We suspect that the incidence of congenital heart disease in infants of mothers with transposition of the great arteries will be at the lower end of the range for mothers with different types of congenital heart disease, but further data will be needed to confirm this.

Presents a case report of successful pregnancy and cesarean section delivery in a patient with single ventricle and transposition of the great arteries.

CONCLUSION: Biological valves are recommended in women of childbearing age, despite the fact that no birth defects were seen in children born to women with mechanical valves on warfarin, because the teratogenic effects of warfarin may be masked by the high rate of miscarriages and therapeutic abortions in this group.
