What is fontan operation in congenital heart disease? |
What is fontan operation in congenital heart disease? Fontan is performed when there is pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum, pulmonary atresia with VSD, tricuspid atresia, hypoplastic right ventricle, Ebstein's anomaly, single ventricle with or without pulmonary stenosis. In the operation pulmonary artery is divided and over sewn proximally, ASD closed directly, tricuspid valve and coronary sinus covered with a patch (avoiding AV node). Right atrium is connected to the MPA (main pulmonary artery) or RPA (right pulmonary artery) by direct suture or by an interposed valveless conduit. The left ventricle is the systemic pumping chamber and the right atrium directs or pumps systemic venous return into the pulmonary artery circulation.
