What are the most noticeable effects from heart disease caused by tobacco? Smoking causes many organs in the body to not function properly and because they don't function properly they cause the heart to not function properly. I guess the most noticeable effect of heart disease caused by tobacco is an increase in blood pressure but that's only if you actually have your blood pressure taken regularly. There are a couple components of smoking that work against the heart and in this case you can't talk about the heart without including the lungs because they work together. One component is nicotine. It is a stimulant and it causes blood vessels to constrict which is seen when some one has high blood pressure. It also increases the heart rate which increases the hearts work load. The faster the heart beats the harder it is working, the harder it works the more oxygenated blood it needs and the more constricted the blood vessels are (the higher the B/P the more constricted the vessels are) the less likely it is that the heart will get the oxygen it will need. It's really quite a vicious cycle. Another thing that makes smoking a problem is that you are essentially taking in carbon monoxide and carbon monoxide attaches itself to the oxygen carrying component of the blood called the hemaglobin easier than oxygen does. That's what causes people to die from prolonged carbon monoxide exposure. The componant actually gets picked up by the blood cell and the oxygen doesn't causing the person to suffocate. This is also one of the things insurance company's test for when they take those blood samples. They are looking for the carboxyhemaglobin level. It takes a while to get out of your system depending on how much you smoke. Ok now back to the original question. So now you actually have less circulating oxygen in your body. Not enough oxygen to the heart is what heart disease is all about. Then there is the tar that accumulates. Between it and the nicotine they cause the cilla ( little hair like cells) that are in the lung to become paralyzed which prevents the fluids in the lung to not be moved around like they should and predisposes the person to various lung diseases not to mention increases your chances of lung infections. All that goes back to the not having the amount of circulating oxygen in the blood system. Another thing it does is dehydrate you which predisposes you to blood clot formation and there you have it. An eminate heart attack. irregular beat and high blood presure tobacco will increase the risk for atherosclerosis (the arteries will become think and narrowed with lipid deposition). atherosclerosis is not symptomatic itself but concerning the heart, one or more of the coronary arteries (which supply the heart) may get narrowed to a degree that insufficient amounts of blood will reach the heart and this will be evident only at exercise first (as chest pain- called angina pectoris), as the narrowing progresses pain may even be at rest. a sudden complete block of a coronary artery secondary to atherosclerosis will result in heart attack (myocardial infarction) in which part of the heart dies. |
