What is a hepatitis titer? |
What is a hepatitis titer? A hep. titer will tell if you have antibodies to hepatitis. If you have any antibodies and have never been vaccinated, it shows that you have had hep. If you have been vaccinated, it tells more or less how much immunity your body has built up against an infection in case you are exposed to the hep. virus. A titer itself is a measurement of the amount or concentration of a substance in a solution. We usually use the term titer to refer to the concentration of antibodies (the substance) in the blood (the solution). Blood can be drawn for antibodies against hepatitis B well as for other diseases that one has been vaccinated against. A hep titer will determine immunity or a need for it. A hepatitis titer is a lab draw to see if you have immuity against hepatits. If it comes back negative or too low (I am not sure how it is reported) then you will have to get another Hepatits immunization. |
