Hepatitis or UTI? |
My husband was recently admitted to the hospital for a very serious UTI. He's had it for quite a few years, but was too stubborn to go to the doctor until it was very serious. All of the tests show that he has a UTI, but his bilirubin was very high. His aunt [a retired nurse] has been telling me all night that it could be hepatitis. The doctors can't run a test until tomorrow. He doesn't have nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite, or jaundice. His primary care doctor/emergency room doctor/urologist said it was an infection that had probably been present for a few years. Their words, not mine. I wouldn't write it if it wasn't something I had heard from medical professionals, as I'm trying to get serious answers. It could also be a coincidence that he's experiencing both those symptoms together. Chronic hepatitis often has no outward symptoms until bloodwork reveals results that are out of normal ranges. He should have a liver panel and /or hepatitis panel done. Many things can cause elevated bilirubin; your doctor will need to determine why the bilirubin is elevated. Best wishes. yes it might be when one has hepatitis there are often no symptoms. most people do not develope symptoms at all or not for many years. most have it for 15+ until they find out they have it. there could be other reasons that his bilirubin is up dont worry until the dr tells you to worry Elevated bilirubin can indicate kidney as well as liver problems; he may have a nephritis (kidney inflammation/infection) rather than hepatitis. It can also occur with hemolysis. You can not have a UTI for "quite a few years". He may have a kidney stone or pylonephritis (kidney infection). Just let the doctors run their tests and take it from there. |
