Describe the nature of Hepatitis B virus?

Hepatitis B is a serious disease caused by a virus that attacks the liver. The virus, which is called hepatitis B virus (HBV), can cause lifelong infection, cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver, liver cancer, liver failure, and death.

What are the signs and symptoms of hepatitis B?

Many persons who are infected with hepatitis B virus have no symptoms. Others become ill with these symptoms:

* Loss of appetite
* Tiredness
* Pain in muscles, joints, or stomach
* Diarrhea or vomiting
* Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes)



Who is at risk for hepatitis B?

Anyone can get hepatitis B, but the risk is higher if a person:

* Has sex with someone infected with hepatitis B virus
* Has sex with more than one partner
* Is a man who has sex with another man
* Lives in the same house with someone who has lifelong hepatitis B virus infection
* Has a job that involves contact with human blood
* Injects illegal drugs
* Is a patient or worker in a home for the developmentally disabled
* Has hemophilia
* Moves or travels often to areas where hepatitis B is common




Hepatitis B vaccine is available for all age groups to prevent hepatitis B virus infection.

Top add a few things, Hep B can be Acute or Chronic which means that it can resolve itself in about 6 months or if it doesn't then it moves on to be chronic which means that you are infected for life and can cause infection to others. Persons who have Chronic Hep B are to not share razors, nailfiles, toothbrushes or to share straws for snorting coke.
