Why wont doctor surgerys give out the Hepatitis B vaccination to St John Volunteers?

It is advised by St John Ambualnce that volunteers get the Heptatitis B vaccination, and they send a letter offering to pay for it with you to the surgery, yet the surgery say they are not supposed to give the vaccination.

Does anyone know why, and where we are supposed to go for this vaccination?

St John tell you to go and ask your local surgery and that if they require payment that they will pay for the vaccination, I would be happy to pay myself given St John is a charity.

I did get my first injection as the Nurse couldn't fnd the practice manager to ask while I was there, so I will have the full course but she left me a message saying that she shouldn't have given it to me.

All she said was that they have a policy that they are not allowed to give the vaccine to St John volunteers, and that we are supposed to go somewhere else.

Only they didn't explain why or where and I was intrigued to know why, as surely first aid volunteers are as entitled to this protection as nurses and other healthcare professionals?

You can get the hep B vaccine at your local health dept. The vaccine is very expensive and that is probably why they can't give it to volunteers. Your post is kinda confusing so I am not sure what you are talking surgery wise. If you are an employee of the facility then they are suppose to offer it to you free.

I am quite stunned that your surgery won't offer you the immunisation. It's usually given to any health workers whose jobs (or volunteers!) might put them at risk of exposure to the virus. This should definitely cover St John's volunteers.

It might be worth contacting the Practice Manager and asking why this is their policy.

It doesn't sound right to me.....

Added: Incidentally, I had my vaccination fort my hospital job done at my surgery and not by occupational health at the hospital. It was just done on the basis of my job for free.

I had the vaccinations as I worked as a health care support worker for a NHS trust. They gave them to me for free, but that was at the hospital rather than the Doctor surgery. Can you go to a walk in vaccination surgery like medicentre and get them there instead? I reckon it's quite important to do for your own piece of mind. If I remember rightly, you need to have 3 of them a month between each one.
