My step son has hepatitis b and i don't know how he got it.can you please explain to me how he may have gotten?

I am trying to figure out if this disease could have been past on from birth.

my step son is 16 with chronic hepatitis b is it possible that he could have contacted from birth from is birth mother.

Hepatitis B is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It ranges in severity from a mild illness, lasting a few weeks (acute), to a serious long-term (chronic) illness that can lead to liver disease or liver cancer.
Transmission: Contact with infectious blood, semen, and other body fluids from having sex with an infected person, sharing contaminated needles to inject drugs, or from an infected mother to her newborn.

Vaccination: Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all infants, older children and adolescents who were not vaccinated previously, and adults at risk for HBV infection.

Sorry to hear this. Info on the CDC web site.

Hepatitis B is a virus that infects the liver. Most adults who get hepatitis B have it for a short time and then get better. This is called acute hepatitis B.
You can have hepatitis B and not know it. You may not have symptoms. If you do, they can make you feel like you have the flu. But as long as you have the virus, you can spread it to others.
Sometimes the virus causes a long-term infection, called chronic hepatitis B. Over time, it can damage your liver. Babies and young children infected with the virus are more likely to get chronic hepatitis B.
You may get hepatitis B if you:

Have sex with an infected person without using a condom.
Share needles (used for injecting drugs) with an infected person.
Get a tattoo or piercing with tools that were not cleaned well.
Share personal items like razors or toothbrushes with an infected person.
A mother who has the virus can pass it to her baby during delivery. If you are pregnant and think you may have been exposed to hepatitis B, get tested. If you have the virus, your baby can get shots to help prevent infection with the virus.

"Possible forms of transmission include (but are not limited to) unprotected sexual contact, blood transfusions, re-use of contaminated needles & syringes, and vertical transmission from mother to child during childbirth. Without intervention, a mother who is positive for the hepatitis B surface antigen confers a 20% risk of passing the infection to her offspring at the time of birth."
He had any sexual contacts lately?

Yes, it can be passed vertically from mother to child (MTC).

HepB is a bloodborne virus, and is transmitted through blood or bodily fluids. Most common mechanisms are sex, vertically (MTC), and needles (IV drug users, occupational).

If it is indeed "chronic HepB", it could very well be that it was transmitted vertically, although you don't mention her serostatus.

Hep. B is not transmitted by fecal matter. That is hep A.

Yes Hep B can be transmitted from the mother during birth. Also if your stepson has had any blood transfusions (it is unlikely) but possible that he could have contracted it this way.

HBV can be mild or chronic. Sometimes it will clear up on its own, and sometimes it develops into longterm liver problems.

it is a very contagious disease and can be spread from blood, saliva, food.
When someone is very sick with it (yellow) their breath can spread it, improperly cleaned items that had contact can spread it.sex can spread it
