Does the Hepatitis A vaccine begin working right away?

I am leaving for China in a week, and I got my first series shot for Hep. A, today.

Will I be protected from Hepatitis A while in China, or was the shot pointless? I'm really scared about getting Hep. A.

So...I'm screwed?

If you got the Havrix brand, at 15 days following vaccination with the first dose of Hep A, you will have an 80-98% chance of having seroconverted (having antibodies).

The second dose of the vaccine, given 6 months later, is meant to catch the 2-20% of people who didn't seroconvert from the first dose.

If you got the Vaqta brand, at 14 days following vaccination with the first dose, you will have a 69.2% chance of having seroconverted.

If you don't find out which brand you got, you have a 69.2% to 98% chance of having antibodies to Hepatitis A, one week into your China trip.

It takes about two weeks for your body to produce the anti-bodies that the vaccine is meant to do. Also, the shot is one of a series, which means they will not be fully effective until you have had all three.
