Does health insurance cover Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B shots?

I know I need to contact my individual healthcare provider, but in general, does Health Insurance cover Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B vaccines? Also, do they typically cover anti-Malaria medication or Yellow Fever vaccine. I am getting ready to go to Africa in a few months and preparing to get my shots. I do not have the Hep A or Hep B vaccine which is pretty routine. So will health insurance cover this? Also, I have heard they generally don't cover travel vaccinations. True?

Most health insurance policies do not cover travel vaccinations. You'll have to call your insurer to find out if your policy has any special rider that would cover them.

Hep A and Hep B vaccines are generally covered for children. But many policies don't cover adult immunizations at all (except tetanus shots), unless there is a state mandate for specific vaccines.

I wouldn't be terribly optimistic that your health insurance would cover all (or even any) of those vaccinations, but the only way to know for sure is to call and ask. Some employers add additional coverage to their benefit plan for adult immunizations, but most don't due to cost.

If you don't have coverage, I'd suggest going to your local health department for the shots. It would be cheaper than going through your regular physician's office.

This is a specific state and specific policy issue. Some states require the vaccine to be covered for all. Some require coverage based on county of residence. But if your policy is self-funded (not governed by state law, only federal) it depends on the specific policy language.

How's that for a fancy "I don't know"?

You will need to call your carrier and ask about each specific vaccine. If they aren't covered, contact your local health department and ask for guidance.

Have fun on your trip!

I wouldn't think so.

Generally, your health insurance will not cover travel vaccinations. You may be able to get them for a lesser cost through your county health organizations.

In general, no. But consult your specific insurer.
