HEP-C

Transmission: Contact with the blood of an infected person, primarily through sharing contaminated needles to inject drugs.

TB

TB is spread through the air from one person to another. The bacteria are put into the air when a person with active TB disease of the lungs or throat coughs or sneezes. People nearby may breathe in these bacteria and become infected.

When a person breathes in TB bacteria, the bacteria can settle in the lungs and begin to grow. From there, they can move through the blood to other parts of the body, such as the kidney, spine, and brain.

TB in the lungs or throat can be infectious. This means that the bacteria can be spread to other people. TB in other parts of the body, such as the kidney or spine, is usually not infectious.

People with active TB disease are most likely to spread it to people they spend time with every day. This includes family members, friends, and coworkers.

So, you probably have a much higher chance of getting TB unless you share needles.

You can all get the TB Vaccine.

Then your visits would be very safe.

Hepatitis C can only be spread through body fluid exchange, (blood, semen, saliva, etc.), so that wouldn't be as big of a concern, though I would practice very good hand-washing, and disinfecting of utensils, etc. The TB is something you need to be concerned about. It makes a difference if the TB is active or latent. Active TB makes a person sick and have symptoms, so you would probably realize the person had active TB, but it is EXTREMELY contagious (airborne) so just breathing droplets of air in that another person has coughed into the air, can infect you. Latent TB is someone who is a carrier of TB, but doesn't have active TB. This person could still spread TB to others at times, especially those with compromised immune systems. Please visit this website: cdc.gov and type in the TB in the search. This should help you determine if you need to be concerned. With two children in the home, I would be very cautious until you have more information both about the disease, and whether the persons TB is active or not.

If he is on treatment for TB for 4 weeks or so, he is sputum negative and non infectious, unless his TB is multi drug resistant. Hep. C is spread through blood and body fluids, there is little chance of it being transmitted to you or your family by this relative. He may eat in your dishes, unless he has bleeding mouth ulcers or gums. Wash the dishes after wards.
