What does it mean if you test positive for hepatitis C, and you have more tests and it is not active?

What does it mean if you test positive for hepatitis C, and you have more tests and it is not active?

It is possible in about 20% of cases to have had hepatitis C and yet resolve the infection (get over it). In that case one can have the antibody to the virus which is what is initially tested for. When liver enzymes are normal and viral loads involving nucleic acid testing (NAT) are negative then that pretty much indicates that the virus is not present. There is a word of caution however as a single test involving NAT and a screen for elevation of liver enzymes is not adequate to exclude chronic infections as both tests can give intermittent results. The liver enzymes may be normal and the NAT testing negative and still have chronic active hepatitis.

The other possibility is that the initial EIA or ELISA test was a false positive. There are other confirmatory tests RIBA (immunoblot) HCV that one can do.

In general a single test for both or either liver enzymes is not enough to call it resolved. You must do repeat testing. The positive test they are referring to is the antibody test which will remain positive for life.

Then you probably have chronic hepatitis C.
