What kills hepatitis's c?

What kills hepatitis's c?

Oh My. Where to start. There is a great deal of misinformation here already. There are definitely treatments to clear the Hepatitis C virus. If you are a genotype 1 or 4 you generally do a year of treatment (sometimes a bit longer) and if you are a genotype 2 or 3 you generally do 6 months of treatment. The *newer* form of interferon is pegylated interferon (slow release) and is given once a week with Ribavirin (an antiviral). The Riba pills are taken twice a day. Rebetron is an older treatment and the interferon was taken three times a week by injection with daily oral Ribavirin. Sometimes a second antiviral is added but that is very rare. There is also an interferon that is given daily with Ribavirin that is FDA approved for nonresponders only at this point. The nonpegylated interferon is called Infergen and is made by Valeant. The pegylated interferons are called Pegasys (made by Roche) and PegIntron (made by Schering). Roche's Riba is called Copegus. Genotypes 1 and 4 are harder to treat but have about a 50% clearance rate. Geno's 2 and 3 are easier to treat and have about an 80% clearance rate.

*Most* people (including some life insurance companies) are using the term cure now if someone has an undectectable viral load for 4 or 5 years after completing treatment.

There are about 5 million people with Hepatitis C and only 1 million who know it. Please ask your doctor to test you! Tests for any hepatitis are generally not done with an annual physical. There are vaccines for Hepatitis A and B but there is not a vaccine for Hepatitis C. Hep C is the most common chronic blood borne virus in the United States today and the leading cause of liver transplants. The earlier you are diagnosed the earlier you can seek medical intervention. It is a slow progressing disease that has little or no symptoms until you have reached cirrhosis and that can take about 10 to 30 years (depending on the person and their lifestyle choices).

You should be tested for Hepatitis C if you:
*Received blood, blood products, or an organ transplant prior to 1992
*Ever shared drug paraphernalia
*Ever been stuck by a used blood needle
*Had a tattoo or body piercing
*Been on kidney dialysis
*Had sexual activity that involved contact with blood
*Had a vaccination with a pneumatic jet gun injector (Military)
*Shared personal care items with other people (razors, toothbrushes, nail clippers, etc.)
*Work as a first responder (EMT, fireman, policeman, etc.) or are in the health care field (Doctor, Nurse, etc.)

Hepatitis C patients outnumber HIV patients 5 to 1 yet most people have no idea about the disease and remained confused about the different types of Hepatitides. You can read about many forms of Hepatitis at http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/hepat...

Also please go to the sites below and help get some badly needed funding for Hepatitis C!

HIV dies when it hits the air. Hepatitis C can live on a surface for 4 to 7 days. Be careful of blood on kleenexes or any surface especially if you have a cut on your hand.

Nothing, Hep C. is controlled, but not cured. there is no known Cure for Hepatitis C.
A combination drug of ribavirin + interferon alfa-2b. The brand name is Rebetron. You need a prescription. It works in about 40% of people.

While there is no known cure for HCV there is medicine..after 2years of clearing the virus you can call yourself 'cured' if you like. I'm a SVR=survivor..I'm almost 2 years clear of the virus. I did Scherings' medicine. Interferon plus ribitrol..I was a genotype 3..going into treatment I had an 85% of clearing the virus. Six months after treatment I showed a <10 iu/mL viral load..I now have a 98% chance of coming up clear in Sept.'07
