I have Mental illness, Hepatitis C. Shouldn't this make me eligible for SSI? SSI is based on income, so you may or may not be eligible to receive benefits. Hepatitis C may qualify you for disability, but your doctor will have to complete Social Security forms. Some mental illnesses would qualify as disabling, but local vocational rehabilitation offices help people, with disabilities, find employment. Find an attorney to help you file for benefits. I know that in some states an attorney will file on a contingency basis for Soc Sec disability. The same might apply to SSI. not sure about the Hep, but mental illness is hard to get qualified for. If you are capable of performing job functions throughout the day, I would say no. I also have a mental illness, Bi-Polar I with mixed episodes, and have been under medical care for 4 consecutive years, they have given me many many different medications to help with my disorder, to no avail. As a last resort I recently had a new procedure called the Vegas Nerve Implant,(VNS), which is a device surgercially placed under the skin on your left side that runs mild electrical stimulation to the brain that controlls moods, so far I am seeing some signs of improvement, it has only been 2 months and sometimes it will take up to a year to feel the full affect. At my doctor's recommendation, is was obvious, to my doctor as well as my supervisor's, I couldn't perform my duties anymore even after being lowered to the simplest job. Yes, mental disorder can make you eligible for SS disability, pending on the severity of your diagnosis. I do not know about SSI, I believe they are 2 different things, I am still waiting to hear from SS about the decision, but yes mental illness is a medical condition, most of the time hereditary, and no different from high blood pressure etc. Take the step and apply, do not take no for an answer until effort is exhausted, make sure you have excellent documentation from your doctor and that they support and recommend the decision. I wish you luck. |
