Hepatitis C-Delivery and breastfeeding? HELP!!!!?

Yesterday I delivered a beautiful healthy child weighing 3.7 kilos with normal vaginal birth and episiotomy. Labour lasted 11 hours after rapture of membrane. I had been diagnosed anti-HCV positive during routine pregnancy tests, but didnt do the PCR during pregnancy, but I am quite healthy with ALT levels very low. Now I dont know the condition of my baby, what is the chance he might have got the infection, what is the chance i can pass it through breastfeeding?? I am so nervous that cant even enjoy my baby, please help if you have any idea.

Very very slim, like under 5%. My husband is Hep C positive and due to some unusual circumstances I was exposed to his blood shortly after we had first gotten together. When I found out I was pregnant I went nuts researching what would happen to my baby if I was positive.

There is no risk to the baby during birth unless you mix your blood and his blood together which they don't allow to happen during birth. You can not transfer it through breast milk, it is a blood only transfer for this disease. Just make sure that your nipples aren't cracked or bleeding. The risk is more to the staff as they are giving you injections, if you had an episiotimy or stitches.

The things you do need to be careful about are not to clean his pacifier with your mouth as you never know when you might have an open sore in your mouth or even just caused the gums to bleed when brushing and baby also has mouth sores. Don't allow the child to suck on your fingers either. You may also want to keep some clear gloves or latex gloves around when the baby gets older and more adventurous. Boys are notorious for cuts and scrapes and you will want to be careful cleaning out his wounds. Chances of transferring Hep C to anyone during routine contact is so minimal. Just be careful around blood and you and the baby will be fine.

NOW GO ENJOY YOUR BABY!!!

(oh and I turned out to be one of the 20% of people who get infected and fight the disease off naturally. I now have an immunity to some types of Hep C, and my baby will have a 50/50 chance of inheriting that from me. So even if your baby fell into the very slim category of getting the virus during the delivery he may be one of the lucky ones like me. Or he will have to undergo the interferon treatment which gives him an over 90% chance of being cured. Hep C is no longer a death sentence.)
Don't nurse, sometimes the nipple can become cracked from the friction of the baby's gums and it'll cause bleeding.
HI, i would not know. Best to ask the doc or nurse who are experienced with this otherwise you are going to worry about it constantly.

All the best.
