Can a person develop high blood pressure as a result of moving to a higher altitude?

I moved from sea level to an altitude of 5300 feet ten years ago. I have had 3 miscarriages and have developed high blood pressure and leaky heart valves since moving. In the last year, I have lost the ability to climb two flights of stairs without stopping to rest and catch my breath. Last month, when I went to sea level, my blood pressure registered normal for the first time in 5 years.

I am seeing a doctor, had an echocardiogram and have changed bp meds as well as obtained a home bp cuff. I was just wondering if my bp might lower if I returned to sea level. I want to go home but my teenage kids like it here. I will continue to have my heart and bp monitored, of course. Thanks for your input.

At higher altitude, the oxygen pressure is lower so your body turned on compensatory measures. Your heart pumps faster, you breath faster, your red blood cells increase. It is called acclimatization. Therefore, it is possible that moving to higher altitude can result to high blood pressure.

And I do hope you're seeing a doctor about. The conditions you described are rather serious.

Well with the increase in altitude comes a lessening in oxygen. This would mean less oxygen in the same amount of blood, so the heart would have to pump more blood to get the required amount of oxygen to the system. The heart having to work harder could cause some issues. Raising the pressure would cause the blood to move faster so it does make some sense.
