High Blood Pressure at 15 years old????

Today at school we went and did disecting and vital sgn checking...
so we took our blood pressure and everyone's was around 100-105 and I took mine and it was
137/81
but I am only 15, I am 5 ft. 8 inches and I weigh 170 ( i know i am like 20 pounds over weight...but i dont think that would do anything.
is this normal...it kind of scares me....
high BP runs in my family.....is my BP high??
***please answer...it's scaring me...the way my teacher made such a big deal about it***

i also have a low grade fever of 99.9

Your blood pressure rises and falls over the course of the day. If you were excited, your blood pressure would have been up. You are not obese obviously, so that's not a problem.

Try taking those bp tests at the drug store and see if it is still high...if so, go see a doctor. I would not worry about it. If it runs in your family, it is unlikely at your age and height that it would cause high bp now, but maybe later.

137 is hypertensive and even teenagers can have hypertension. Obesity is a major contributing factor to hypertension. I'm not saying you're obese but extra weight can hurt a person and a family history of hypertension doesn't work in your favor either. Hypertension causes the same damage in teenagers as it does in adults so don't believe you're safe from it's effects just because you're young.

So be realistic. I suggest that you ask one of your parents to take you in to see your doctor so you can be evaluated and, if need be, get started on a management program. You would be told to be more active and to make changes in your eating habits. You know, cut out the snacks, eat healthier and don't be a couch potato, give the 360 and PS3 a break.

The teacher was wrong to make a big deal about this and I hope this wasn't in front of your classmates. I expect it was out of concern for you. He/she should have spoken to you privately and suggested you tell your parents.

B/P should be meaured at 3 different times of day on 3 different days. Day 1 might be in the morning, day 2 in the afternoon, etc. Where you happen to be can affect it. It can be higher in a doctor's office due to nervousness. B/Ps taken within an hour of physical exercise will be higher. B/P tends to be higher at the end of the day than at the start. The normal stresses of the day take their toll. Taking it at different times and days gives a better baseline and a better idea of what your individual range is.

You're in no immediate danger but don't put off seeing your doctor. And, yes, you're ideal weight is 154 give or take a few pounds. You seem like a cool guy. This is something you can do.

yeah its high--should be eating blueberries to keep BP normal
