I am 21 and my blood pressure is 139/116 is that to high?

I am 21 and my blood pressure is 139/116 is that to high?

Yes that is very high blood pressure. But there are a variety of reasons why it might be so high other than a disease. You should always rest for 15 minutes before taking your blood pressure and sit while you take it. If it continues to be that high go see a doctor.

This is high. Especially for your age.

The top number (systolic) is borderline high. This means you could be pre-hypertensive. Systolic BP is the force of blood against the vessel walls when the heart is contracting or pumping.

The bottom number (diastolic) is very high which means your heart is not getting a lot of rest. Diastolic BP refers to the time when the heart is in a period of relaxation and expansion.

This indicates that your heart may be working too hard. You should have it checked out by a doctor.

yes that is a very high bp # for anyone espically a 21yr old.... im 23yrs old and my bottom number has never gone over 95 even if im nervous ( and i HATE doctors office and Hospitals) .... Id have your doctor retake but make sure your sitting and not laying down and make sure your not nervous thinking about something. I was at the ER 3wks ago and mine was 134/89 and they told me that was a little high but considering i was nervous sitting in the ER they said to have my doctor re-check in 2wks

It is. optimal numbers are supposed to be 120/80, though some say 130/90 is the max.

Good news is you are still young so it shouldn't be affecting you right away. But get it fixed asap.
