What would cause drop in amniotic fluid level? High blood pressure?

My doctor has been giving me ultrasound every week to check amniotic fluid level, among some other things... I don't know why because my level has never, ever been low. I've always had plenty of fluid around the baby.

I am almost 39 weeks and have been closely monitored for the past few weeks for high blood pressure. I will be induced on Monday because of the high BP. Does high blood pressure cause you to lose amniotic fluid? What would cause a sudden loss of amnio fluid??

Also how fast can this level drop? A week ago I had 16cm of fluid (which I was told was very good)... I'm having another ultrasound Monday before the induction to check again.. what is the likelihood that it has dropped significantly since then?

im not sure about the high bp causing low amniotic fluid but it can cause preeclampsia. i had that with my first and didnt realize until recently how serious it can be. if your being induced on monday then i would just lay around and relax. dont worry about anything. just call your ob if anything weird starts happening
good luck with the baby!

High blood pressure doesn't cause low amniotic fluid. If you have high blood pressure it could lead to preeclampsia but that alone wouldn't cause him to give you an ultrasound every few weeks. A small rupture in the sac could cause less fluid but when they do an ultrasound, it's just standard procedure to measure how much fluid is in there. Just like body measurements and heart rates. My sister's sac had a leak in it and her daughter was a "dry" birth. The baby was fine. Loosing water for the last week slowly probably wouldn't hurt anything.

They told me my fluid level was low but never mentioned why or said I would need to be induced because of it.

If it hasn't dropped I wouldn't worry, they might just want to check the level among other things. I really don't know why they even did an ultrasound with me if nothing meant anything (meaning they won't do anything regardless of the results).

Stupid doctors sometimes...

i had that with my last one too. depending on your gestational age it could be a genetic defect inthe child.
but many times they dont know. normal is a general term and odesnt always apply to everyone. just try to relax and rest and keep up your fluids.
