Any young women here have High blood Pressure? |
I have to go monday to get a sonogram of my kidneys b/c the doc says I might have a form of sclerosis that affects my arteries to my kidneys. She also says this could be the reason for my HBP and if I have surgery (angioplasty - balloon inserted into the arteries affected and filled to open the arteries) then my BP will/might go down, seeing as I am 31 and have had HBP for almost 10 yrs and taken all kinds of medicine under the sun and nothing has brought it down. How bad is the surgery? How long would I have to stay out of work? I am a single parent, will I have to get a living will? I am really not a worry wart at heart, just when it comes to people cutting on me I get nervous! Based on what you describe, I suspect your doctor is looking for a sprecific condition known as fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD). This is a condition in which blood flow to the kidneys is restricted. This triggers a process that leads to high blood pressure. If the ultrasound leads to a catheterization and FMD is confirmed, the good news is that angioplasty will likely cure your high blood pressure. The procedure involves a needle being inserted into the femoral artery in your groin. Then, a tube called a sheath which is similar to an IV, is placed. Typically this is between 2-3 mm in diameter. Next, the catheters are used to inject dye into the arteries. If needed, a balloon is then advanced in and inflated within the artery. At the end of the procedure all the equipment is removed. The doctor may or may not use a device to "plug" the small hole in your artery. In either case, you will lilely spend one night in the hospital. Following this, you will go home. After a week you should be able to return to all your normal activities. During this recovery period you will need to avoid heavy lefting, bending or stooping. If you are going to have this proceure, your doctor will explain all of this to you in detail. As far as your question about a living will, there are two issues. First, the risk of a major complication related to the procedures described above is less than 1%. Nevertheless, it is a good idea to have a living will as well as documents stating who you would want to care for your kids, etc. Unfortunatley you never know when an accident may occur. Source(s): I am a cardiologist who perfroms renal artery angioplasty and stenting Everyones bp goes up when they are nervous, scared, excited, or in pain. It is human nature. Unfortunatly I have one of the lowest bp's every I seen. I once had a nurse tell me I should be unconsious.....Some can't even find my bp, lol. Sorry, but good luck. who said you have what is called (renal artery stenosis)? lets find the ultrasound result first, right? if you are african american, then you better use "Calcium" Cannel Blocker (like Adalat) becuase its proven to be more effective in african american. A young woman with difficult to control hypertension is more likely than others to have a treatable cause or secondary high blood pressure; as opposed to essential hypertension, which is the case in the vast majority of cases, has no known cause, and is treated with blood pressure pills. A sonogram will only glean the size of your kidneys and evidence of chronic disease. It is a very poor screening test for arterial blockages. A radioisotope scan is sometimes used to screen for blockages, but the gold-standard is an angiogram because of its low rate of false results. A patient with sudden severe hypertension, unresponsive to medicines, with an abdominal noise or bruit should get an angiogram as her first test because of all the risk factors present. Other causes of high blood pressure may need to be entertained including endocrine disorders, diabetes and kidney diseases. I have had 3 angio's and they are not bad. They will give you medication to calm you, you will be awake but you wont care. As far as how long you will be out of work, that will be up to your Doctor. Good Luck and I know its hard but stay calm. |
