There are several causes. The most common is family history, so if your mother and/or father have it, chances are you will too. Stress is a big one. Being 15 or more pounds overweight is another, and so is lack of exercise. Contrary to popular belief, too much sodium in your diet does NOT cause high blood pressure (but it's bad for you if you have high blood pressure).
