Have a question about taking high blood pressure medication. Need some help!!?

I'm currently taking 100mg Metoprolol daily for high blood pressure. As normal, I'm experiencing sexual side effects, meaning getting and maintaining an erection. Is there any over the counter medications, or herbal remedies that I could use to counteract the effects of the blood pressure med. that will not have any harmfull side effects or will raise my blood pressure up? I'm 50 years old also.

Metoprolol is in a class of high blood pressure medications known as beta blockers. And beta blockers cause erectile dysfunction in males. See: http://www.drugs.com/metoprolol.html...

The most important thing you must do is talk to your doctor. He can lower your dosage and monitor your blood pressure. He might also put you on another class of meds where there is less of a chance of having erectile problems.

Are you doing other things to help lower your blood pressure? Doing that might influence how much medication you have to take. Are you on some sort of exercise program, like walking or swimming? Are you worried about something that is increasing your anxiety level and your blood pressure? Have you cut back on salt (if that is indicated by your doctor)? Are you cutting back on alcohol consumption? Are you over-working?

Good luck now. I am sure that you and your doctor can work together to find a solution. Source(s): Another middle-aged guy here.
Have you talked to your doc? I had similar issues and he put me on verapamil, didn't have side effects.
Really, only your doctor can answer that question. They know your health situation best. We don't know what other problems you may have and why the doctor chose that particular category of drugs for you to take. Don't be embarrased. Just ask the doc about it. It's probably not anything he's never heard before.
My husband is 57 and takes several medications for high blood pressure and does not have any problems. You may need to change to another medication, there are numerous ones out there. Talk to your doctor. (Also, he takes only 1/2 and 1/4 doses of some of them, as it varies individually as to what works for each person. If your doctor does not closely monitor your prescriptions, do some research online about the meds you're taking. That's what we did and found the doctor had WAY overprescribed some of the dosages.)
