Why does hemorrhoid ointment contain warnings for people with high blood pressure? |
What is in this stuff that raises blood pressure? Hemorrhoid ointments contain vasoconstrictors which cause the blood vessels to shrink, allowing the hemorrhoids to shrink as well. Hemorrhoids are enlarged blood vessles, usually in the rectum or anal sphincter; however, the surrounding vessles can be affected, especially when using topical medications. Remember, these medications are formulated to absorb into tissues, so caution should be used regardless. This can cause a rise in blood pressure if the ointment enters the rectum. The lining of the colon (as with the intestines) allows some materials to pass through the wall into the bloodstream. Should this happen with the ointment, there is a likelihood of blood pressure rising. People with thyroid disease, diabetes, heart disease, and kidney disease or those who are pregnant, should also be cautious when using these products. As always, if you have a health problem or concern, consult your doctor or pharmacist before using any medications that have not been specifically prescribed to you. Peace, Beki are you serious? I did not know that! Is there a corticosteroid like hydrocortisone in the ointment? These medications can raise blood pressure i dont know i had those when i was 14 lol first time i got it it itched for a week couldnt sleep worst itch i ever had in my life was smacking my but non stop got a few blisters on the cheaks the scars remind me everytime im lookin at my sweet but in the mirror. lol jk, well i did have them but didnt get blisters =P well i used the little wipe thingys you stick in ure but... not up your but, but just on your but so its on contact with it. my dad gave me a bullet once and i tried to get er' up there but about passed out cause it was so sick... =P there are many different medications for hemorrhoids. the ones with warnings for high blood pressure work to constrict blood vessels. Preparation H was reformulated several years ago, and now contains phenylephrine. This compound constricts blood vessels, which can cause an elevation in blood pressure. |
