Why do African Americans have a genetic disposition to High Blood Pressure? |
Why do African Americans have a genetic disposition to High Blood Pressure? My theory is that it's because African-Americans are descendants of the slaves that survived the Middle Passage, horrible, hot conditions, chained to the bottom of a boat. I think there's a connection between what it takes to survive that (water retention?) and how the body deals with blood pressure. Africans in Africa don't have the disposition to high blood pressure. It has been contributed to diet and a lack of sufficient medical care do to lack of insurance. honestly, i dont believe a race has anything to do with medical factors. if you think about it, with as many races that live on this planet, each race is going to have a larger amount of people affected with something. i think its more of personal genetics, like close family, and not the race itself that affects the outcome of one's health. being white doesnt mean your more prone to enphuzemia, but instead, if you sit back and count each person and compare numbers to race, more caucasions have it. one race has to have more than another because there isnt an exact number of people in each race to match other races. That's a good question...as to whether its what they eat or if it IS genetic. I do know a lot of black people with high blood pressure (especially men) and diabetes for that matter. They have proven that Native Americans don't metabolize sugar as well as caucasions and get diabetes more often, so perhaps there is a genetic factor with black folks as well. The answer below about the passage from africa is the correct answer. It was on Oprah today. Oprah 4-26-2007 |
