Is it safe to abruptly stop taking medication for high blood pressure and anti-depressants?

My doctor just took me off both to go on medication for high cholesterol, but I'd always thought it wasn't safe to abruptly stop taking ANY kind of prescribed medicine.

To stop taking anti-depressants abruptly is very very very dangerous, it's a downward spiral and you can have a major breakdown. You need to be weened off them or put on to another type. Please don't stop taking anti-depressants altogether, even if your doctor told you to, unless you're having an allergic reaction or bad side effects. Take one every other day for 2 weeks then one every 3rd day for 2 weeks etc. I cannot comment on blood pressure or cholesterol but those are factors that are more easily regulated. If your cholesterol/blood pressure is stable and controlled and you no longer need to be on medication then I can't understand why you should be. But yes, you are absolutely right, certain medications you should not stop abruptly. Get another opinion if you're worried.
It's usually not, I would go see another doctor, get a second opinion
Not normally reccomended, but trust him.... he is the one with the knowledge.?!
Perhaps a second opinion is in order.?
no you need to consult your dr, especially anti depressants you need to wean off of them.
your supposed to be weaned off your gonna get withdrawal symptoms from hell doing that
I took Cymbalta which made me even MORE depressed! I took myself off of it cold turkey. I was severly nauseated for awhile but I got over it. It was SO worth it to be off that crap. The actual procedure was to use decreasing doses to go off of it but I just wanted it out of my system.
It is unusual for anti depressants to be stopped so abruptly, usually there is a weaning off process, but one would expect your doctor to know best
