Anyone had a very bad coughing problem while taking the med Vasotec for high blood pressure?

My couging got worse a few months ago. My doctor stated the meidication Vasotec could be my problem. Today he finally determined this and ask me to refrain from taking Vasotec for 5 days and to drink Pedilyte to wash the drug from my system. My sister just told me that she had a problem with excessive chronic coughing while taking this drug. I looked it up in Google but it mentioned coughing but not a lot of details. Someone out there PLease Help!!!

Vasctec like all ACE inhibitors works by inhibiting angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). ACE is resposible for converting angiotensin I which is inactive to angiotensin II which is a vasoconstrictor (narrows the blood vessels).
By constricting the blood vessels angiotensin II causes the blood pressure to rise. It also activates aldosterone which causes the body to retain sodium and water. This also raises the blood pressure because now there is more fluid in the blood vessels. Angiotensin II also stimulates the sympathetic nervous system which further constricts the blood vessels.
Considering all the actions of angitensin II it is easy to see why an ACE inhibitor which blocks its production causes the blood pressure to go down.
The problem is that ACE has another name. It is also known as kininase II. Kininase II is responsible for the breakdown of a substance known as bradykinin. Bradykinin unlike angiotensin II is a vasodilator (makes blood vessels larger). Kininase II does not have an effect on histamine although some of the actions of histamine and bradykinin are similar. Also while histamine is mostly released during an allergic reaction, bradykinin is constantly in the blood stream.
Because ACE inhibitors block the action of ACE/kininase II, the body can not activate angiotensin or inactivate bradykinin. The active bradykinin therefore causes vasodialation and when it causes vasodilation in the trachea it can cause coughing.
This is more common in women than men and aften begins after you have been taking the medication for a week or more. Stopping the medication will usually end the cough in a few days.
Taking aspirin can sometime end the cough as can iron supplements.
Angitesin receptor blockers (ARBs) such as Diovan and Cozaar work by blocking the receptors that angiotensin II works on but does not inhibit the breakdown of bradykinin and is therefor associated with a cough and angioedema (which is what causes the cough) in a very small percentage of patients. The main drawback to using an ARB is the increased cost as they often cost twice as much as an ACE.
My mom was taking bld psr meds and had the same problem there isn't too much of a way around it :(
I had a problem with it. Once you are off the medication and it's out of your system you should be fine. I'm hoping your doctor put you on something else for your blood pressure. I've been on Norvasc for about 2 years and have been fine on that.
No coughing.. Likely the meds... Nobody should ever need to use medication to fix BP! Unless you are in that 0.0001% of the population you should talk to someone who knows about nutrition... My father went from deadly BP to excellent in 5 weeks by cutting out refined foods! Sugar, white breat etc...
No side effects it's not medication...
I take Vasotec, and yes, when I first started taking it I did have coughing spells. Mine were not so severe that I had to stop taking the medication. I apperently built up a tolerence to the medication, after a few weeks the coughing slowly went away. I have heard different opinions of this drug reguarding it's pro's and con's. It, combined with a coupple of other medications seem to be keeping my blood pressure in check. I would advise you to talk to your doctor. Ask if they can try something other than Vasotec. Side effects should never out-weigh the effectiveness of a medication.

As a matter of fact, dry cough is one of the side effects of this drug.fortunately doctors have a wide variety of choices of antihypertensive medicine. drugs such as Lozartan(Pozarex)and many other drugs don't have this side effect.if i were in your shoes i would consult my doctor and ask him to change his treatment plan.
