Is it a bad, good, or neutral idea to go on a low carb diet while having high blood pressure?



I'm on a low carb diet and it works beautifully for me. My mother is very overweight and has high blood pressure. She asked me to find out if it is a good diet for her to start.

Low sodium would be the most crucial, since high-sodium intake has been tied in to elevated blood pressure.

But she needs to lose weight if she is going to actually reduce her blood pressure, and a low-carb diet would definately help. So the short term solution for blood pressure reduction would be the low-carbs, and to actually keep that level down, she should continue on with a strict low-sodium diet.
If she will avoid high fat foods then yes.. if she won't have self-control.. then no.

She needs a low salt diet to reduce her blood pressure.
If you're overweight, it's good to lose some pounds to help your high blood pressure. However, your brain needs three things in order to function properly - water, some (healthy) fat, and GOOD carbs!

The key is to eat a balanced diet and to eat in MODERATION. Try using a smaller plate at home and, when out to eat, ask for a take-out box to come with your order and put half your food in it right away.

Good nutrition will naturally help your body get to it's healthy weight!
