Does high altitude raise blood pressure? Since I moved to 5,000 ft, I've been having problems controlling it.

I've been taking both beta-blockers & diuretics for years and recently had a stroke.
Could the higher altitude be contributing somehow?

High altitudes have less oxygen. Thus in order for the brain and heart to get sufficient oxygen, you need to send blood faster to these areas. In order to get the heart to speed up a sympathetic stimulation is needed. This not only increases the heart rate but also causes blood vessels to constrict, both of which raise blood pressure. You need to speak to your cardiologist about adjusting your medications.
5000 feet! do buildingd even go that high?!
High altitude definetly affects your blood pressure. It often takes up to a year to become acclimated. See the web site below for an article with a good explanation.

I don't think that 5000 ft would be much of a concern although im not a doctor..but have moved to almost 9000 ft.About 7 months ago started hearing my heartbeat in my ears..I went to the doctor that found a mumur that I didnt know that I had but said it was an innoncent murmur..The distress this caused me before i went to the doctor with it caused me to loose almost 40 pounds.I mentioned this to the doctor and they said great..its better for your heart and your blood pressure.Although my blood pressure was elevated when i was at their offices they said i had white coat symdrome and it would go back down when i left..not much of a concern since I dont have the symptoms of anything being wrong.I saw two different doctors one being a vascular specialist and both found nothing to be wrong. The hearing the heart beat is a benign condition that is caused by loss of tissue around the ear drum and the back of the neck and chest..Well to tell you the truth..after losing 40 pounds.. i had been taking a beta blocker like you and started taking the supplmental asprin because of worry about stroke or heart attack. After several weeks I started feeling as though i was going to pass out in the mornings.. it was because my blood pressure was too low.I have now cut out the asprin and things seem to be ok,,but everything is much different at higher altitude .Although you are only at 5000 ft it very much could have contributed to it...The high country causes alot of weird things here..I wasn't even trying to lose weight but metabolism rate is three times higher here than at sea level.Hearing my heartbeat doesnt make me feel too good either it scares me because it doesnt sound right to me but the doctors assure me the only thing I need is to get out more and do things.Hearing my heart beat is a permanant thing and I have to live with it but its not very reassuring but what can you do.. After all is said and done..I think you are correct in your assumption that the altitude could contribute but well its kind of hard to say because altitude effects people in different ways.. some no problem others get all kinds of things wrong with them. The weird thing is that people that live in high country live longer..I mean just look at the people in Tibet .All of them are skinny and old..some of them dont even know how old..If the altitude has contributed to your high blood pressure I am just about assuming that the doctors will tell you just wait and it will even out. They wouldnt let me adjust mine and im glad that I didn't I would have passed out probably. When you move to a high area your blood pressure adjust when you adjust so anyway I have probably told you a lot more than you want to know.. but hope this helps a little..
