How do you know if you have high or low blood pressure? First you have to have your blood pressure taken of course. Hypertension or high blood pressure is called the silent killer because it has few outward signs. The standards for blood pressure are set by the us Dept. of Health and Human Services and they are <120 over <80 is normal, 120-139 over 80-89 is pre-hypertensive, 140-159 over 90-99 is stage one hypertension and >160 over >100 is stage two hypertension. Low blood pressure or hypotension is usually seen as a symptom of another problem. Bradycardia (slow heart rate), bleeding, or septic shock are some examples.
