My husband just got a letter in the mail saying that is blood pressure is too high. What are the risks?

What are the risks of having untreated high blood pressure? He also drinks like a fish and smokes heavily. He actually threw the letter out. He is not interested in changing any of his habits. He is over weight and has anger issues to top it all off. He is only 34. I fear he will drop of a heart attack.

Your husband is at a very high risk for a stroke or a heart attack. High blood pressure puts him at high risk for both, but when you add smoking and drinking it goes up even more. If he eats a lot of junk food/fast food and drinks a lot of soft drinks it REALLY goes up. He needs to make some changes NOW. Here is a list of things he should do:

1. Quit smoking.

2. Cut back on the drinking (1-2 drinks a night at most)

3. Cut way back on sodium intake -- it's not a problem if you don't have high blood pressure and it doesn't cause high blood pressure, but if you have it salt makes it worse.

4. See the doctor and get a prescription for medication to lower his blood pressure.

5. Do cardiovascular exercise for at least 30 minutes a day 3 times a week.

6. Cut back on the "bad for you" stuff and eat more of the things we all know we should eat more of.

7. Lose weight -- enough to get back within 10 pounds of his "ideal" weight.

If he's not willing to make any changes, then maybe you should take him out shopping for caskets. Seriously! Tell him you want him to come with you for a special shopping trip, then browse for headstones, burial plots, the whole nine yards. If he gets indignant with you, tell him point-blank that he is going to drop dead of a stroke or a heart attack within the next two years at the rate he's going, so he has two choices: (1) Stop being such a stubborn @$$ and do what he knows he needs to do to get his blood pressure back down, or (2) Pick out a casket, a burial plot, a headstone, a funeral home, etc., and pay for everything NOW.

I wish you luck.
WOW your asking this type of question here, when you should be asking HIS DOCTOR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you have kids with him? If so tell him that unless he gets treatment and stops drinking and smoking that he will not be around to see them grow up. The person above obviously doesn't know about the privacy rules. Even a wife cannot talk to his doctor and get info without his permission.
A letter? I have never heard of a doctor sending a patient a letter about their health. It breaks about 10 laws doing that.

If he doesn't want to change, there is nothing you can do. Nothing.

You may want to get yourself into some counseling.
I don't know what to tell you. But you are right he probably will. Sad thing is there is nothing you can do for him. He has to want to do it himself. Men are very stubborn. Some think they are invincible. I know how it is to want someone to do something to help themselves, and I know they have to want to do it, there is no forcing them. No matter how much you love them and you want them to do the right thing, they have to make the decision.
God bless you and good luck.
It depends on how high it is, but the higher it is the more risk he has for strokes and heart disease. I have the problem myself, it is mild but it does require medication. Anger and stress makes the problem worse as well. Maybe try to let him know how much you care about him and tell him you want him to live a long time? Good luck hon.
blood pressure too high can cause STROKE. so be careful and watch your husband diet. give him something not too salty beause salty food will increase the pressure.
