IF salt sensitive, how long does a high sodium dose affect your blood pressure? |
Kind of a tough question...I think i am sodium or salt sesitive, it makes my blood pressure go up about 10 points...how long does this last? how long does your body take to flush a high sodium dose? That is a tough question, because it depends on a lot of factors. One: how high is a high sodium dose? The kidney can only get rid of so much salt at a time. The more water you drink, the faster you can get rid of salt, at least in theory. However, if you are sensitive to salt, that means that your kidneys want to hold onto the salt, and that's why a normal diet can still result in high sodium levels and high blood pressure. The best way to figure out would be by trying out a low salt diet for a month and making daily recordings of your blood pressure, in the morning, when stress is affecting you the least, since that can also increase your blood pressure. Then eat a regular diet and do the same thing. That would give you a definitive answer as to whether you're salt sensitive or not. If I had to make a complete out of the blue guess as to how long a "high" dose of salt would affect you, I'd say up to a week. |
