What's the substance that moderates blood pressure, that makes it lower if it's high or makes it higher if low Unfortunately, blood pressure is a multifactorial issue, in other words, there is no single substance "to blame". Anything from "stress" (ie catecholamine induced) to hormones (ie cortisol) cause an upward trend in blood pressure. Anatomic changes in the vessel walls from diabetes or smoking are also confounding factors. Some research points to free radicals and nitric oxide, but clinical data clearly points to a multifactorial cause and approach to high blood pressure. Source(s): Medical School and Clinical medical practice Answer is too complicated. There are many things that contribute to high and low blood pressure. High BP can be caused by being overweight, stress, anxiety, smoking, diabetes, heredity, diet, water retention. BP cannot be moderated by anything but good health, good genes, and meds. Cholesterol Your body has various ways of controlling its own blood pressure. Baroreceptors in the carotids monitor the blood pressure, and when low, starts a short cascade of events that inreases it. Depending on how low, there are various steps your body can take. Your body can release chemicals to help you retain water, and can make your heart pump "harder", your veins and arteries squeeze, and various other steps to maintain blood pressure. Discussing them here would require several pages worth of text! Obviously, our bodies don't work so well in the opposite direction...since so many people have hypertension. Of course, under NORMAL circumstances, when our blood pressure is elevated, our body has mechanisms to bring it back down. I'll take a wild guess...is it Angiotensin? |
